Al Qaeda demands ransom for Spanish hostages, one freed

MADRID March 13, 2010 - Al Qaeda had kidnapped three Spanish hostages in Mauritania in November. It released one of them - Spanish aid worker, Alicia Gamez, earlier this week. To free the other two, it wants a $5 million ransom and the release of imprisoned Islamist fighters. Newspaper El Pais said this, based on its sources of information.

The remaining two US missionaries to stay in Haiti jail at least until Tuesday

BANGKOK  Feb 26, 2010  Thailand’s Supreme Court  today  seized $1.4 billion worth of assets belonging to former premier Thaksin Shinawatra’s family.  This leaves about $900 million untouched. The decision could make some anti-government groups happy.

BEIJING Feb 8, 2010 Chinese inspectors have shut dairy firms in the northwest after they found contaminated milk powder there. They seized 72 tonnes of milk powder tainted with melamine. Melamine is a compound commonly used in plastics or fertilizer. But it can also be added to foods to show high protein levels in tests.
