Floods kill 20, destroy dams in Kazakhstan

ALMATY March 13, 2010 Severe floods destroyed two dams in southern Kazakhstan. Around 20 people died and thousands had to be evacuated. The rescue operation is continuing. Eastern Kazakhstan is experiencing heavy snow storms. A medical evacuation helicopter trying to rescue people crashed in stormy weather killing all eight people on board.

French President Sarkozy visits Haiti, unveils major aid package

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. USA Feb 08, 2010 At least five people were killed and 12 injured on Sunday when a massive explosion rocked a large gas-fired power plant being built in Middletown, Connecticut, U.S.A. Fire officials said a natural gas leak caused the blast at the Kleen Energy Systems LLC facility. 

Main parts of crashed Ethiopian jet found off Lebanon

BEIRUT Feb 06, 2010 Search teams have found the main parts of the Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed off the coast of Lebanon last month killing all 90 people on board. The Lebanese transport minister said the ship "Ocean Alert" was combing the Mediterranean Sea and taking pictures for search teams to have a better idea of the find. Lebanese and international search teams have been scouring the sea along Beirut’s coast. The U.S. navy vessel, USS Ramage, located the flight recorders some 1,300 metres underwater on Jan. 27 but has yet to retrieve them.

Haiti mourns its dead, govt ends rescue operation

PORT-AU-PRINCE Jan 24, 2010 Haiti mourned its dead on Saturday - hundreds gathered in a wrecked cathedral to honor those killed in the earthquake. Prominent among the dead were Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot and Vicar General Charles Benoit. Search-and-rescue teams have saved 132 people since the quake on Jan 12 .
