No clear lead in Iraq elections, results are delayed again

BAGHDAD March 13, 2010 - Partial results of Iraq’s tight election were released on Friday.  Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki had a narrow lead over rival Shi’ites.  But a secularist challenger remained far ahead in minority Sunni areas.

Floods kill 20, destroy dams in Kazakhstan

ALMATY March 13, 2010 Severe floods destroyed two dams in southern Kazakhstan. Around 20 people died and thousands had to be evacuated. The rescue operation is continuing. Eastern Kazakhstan is experiencing heavy snow storms. A medical evacuation helicopter trying to rescue people crashed in stormy weather killing all eight people on board.

U.S. calls Myanmar election laws a mockery

WASHINGTON March 12, 2010 Myanmar’s military government has enacted new laws for elections due later this year. The United States feels it makes a "mockery" of democracy. In the circumstances, the elections will be a joke, U.S. said on Wednesday. It also felt it would weaken U.S. efforts to improve ties with the country earlier known as Burma.

Court in Azerbaijan rejects appeal to release bloggers

BAKU March 11, 2010 Two Azerbaijani opposition bloggers, Adnan Hajizade, 26, and Emin Milli, 30, were sentenced to two years and two and a half years imprisonment over a violent incident in a cafe in the capital Baku last July.
