North Korean leader Kim Jong-il pledges to remove nuclear weapons from the peninsula

SEOUL  Feb 9, 2010  In a meeting with Chinese Communist Party international affairs chief Wang Jiarui, reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-il pledged to remove nuclear weapons from the peninsula, reports  Xinhua news agency.     North  has been staying away from international talks for cutting down nuclear arms stocks.  By  reducing the military threat it poses to the region, It could  get international aid to prop up its economy

DAMASCUS Jan 29, 2010  Hamas said that Israel has killed  Mahmoud al-Mabhouh,  a senior Hamas military commander in Dubai,  on Jan. 20. Izzat al-Rishq, who is a member of Hamas’s politburo, did  not give details.   He said Mabhouh was an "important" member of Izz el-Deen al- Qassam brigades,  which is Hamas’s military wing.

North Korea fires more artillery near South; tension builds up

SEOUL  Jan 28, 2010  North Korea fired several artillery rounds on Thursday in the direction of a South Korean island off the peninsula, Yonhap news agency said.  This is the  second day of shooting near a disputed sea border.

August 2009 Iraq truck bombings: court sentences 11 Iraqis with death penalty

BAGHDAD  Jan 14, 2010  A court sentenced 11 Iraqis today to death by hanging for their role in the  massive truck bombings in Baghdad last August. 95 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in the bombings. 

U.S. drone fires missiles at Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud's hideout

PESHAWAR Jan 14, 2010  A U.S. drone fired two missiles  today at a  hideout of  Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud. Pakistani officials did not confirm whether he was hit.                                      

Taiwan says needs high-tech arms from the United States to defend against China

TAIPEI  Jan 14, 2010  Taiwan needs high-tech arms  from the United States to give it strength in talks with political and military rival China, the island government said today.
                                       
    Taiwan estimates China is aiming 1,000 to 1,500 missiles at  it.

   China and Taiwan must "respect each other", Liu Te-shun, vice chairman of the country's policy making body, added at a news conference.
